Three in Thirty: What Are Your Goals for April?

Wow, a brand new month to start fresh with new goals. And for me, tomorrow is also the beginning of Project 333. And the beginning of the Ultimate Blog Challenge. It's not too late to join us. Great exposure for your blog!

/

On the other hand, it will be just another fun day in the Six Items or Less Challenge (started last week).

My Goals this Month...

(1) For Lent, I have been getting up early every morning to get in a couple of hours of work before homeschooling my son (I know! I can hardly believe it, myself!!).

So my goal is to continue doing that this month.

I don't think I'm ready to add an earlier bedtime to my goal. Though that was part of my plan, I gave myself a loophole of getting up anyway even if I stay up too late and I have been doing that.

(2) Develop my signature style: wasn't sure what to call this one, but the primary reason I am doing Project 333 is to road test what's in my closet. Does each item I picked express who I am, do I love it & does it love me back? That is the question.

(3) Decide how I will repurpose my content: as I blog and guest moderate for Six Items or Less, guest post for Hope for Women magazine and create blog posts here as well, I need to consider how I will repurpose my content.

Blog Plan

I will not be blogging every day about the wardrobe challenges I am in this month. Instead, I will write about them on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Mondays will offer a four-part planning guide for participating in a 30-day wardrobe challenge.Wednesdays will offer a series on how to create a month's worth of outfits (30 or more) with just ten items of clothing.

Guess what I'll be doing on Thursdays? Yep, telling you how I'm doing toward my 3 in 30 goals!

And because I am participating in the Ultimate Blog Challenge, there will be bonus posts on the weekends. Drop by to see what's up.

What are your goals for the month?

My Best 30 Day Wardrobe Challenge Yet! Third Time's the Charm?

Grey skies are gonna clear up, baby! J

And this may turn out to be the very best 30-day wardrobe challenge yet!

Why do I say that? Because in spite of the rain and the morning fogginess that made it really hard to get up, I am in love with my outfit!

I’m thinking now that maybe this will become my favorite.
In fact, I have absolutely nowhere I need to go today, just working at home, but I am not quite ready to give this outfit back to my closet.
What I’m Wearing

Brown lace cardigan
Grey tank top
Brown pants
No Scarves Need Apply
During the last 30-day wardrobe challenge, and even during my first experience with Six items or Less, I kept trying to add scarves to make my outfits more interesting. I now conclude that that must have been because they weren’t quite okay on their own.
Because I feel no need to add a scarf today. The jewelry is a nice touch, but even with that, I felt okay with the outfit as soon as I added the earrings. I just added the rest of the jewelry for fun!

Are you enjoying your outfit today?

The 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge Continues...

Day Two: Today's Outfit...

Cloud cardigan
Grey tank top
Brown pants

My Experience, So Far...

One of the unexpected blessings I've experienced, so far, is getting to see the return of quite a few of the Sixers from the last cycle. It is wonderful to see them again and know I'll be sharing this cycle with them, too!

The sense of community was one of the best gifts of the last Six Items or Less experience, so I look forward to hanging out with all of them again. And making new Six friends.

It's not too late to join us, by the way. Even though the challenge began yesterday, they are still accepting registrations through Wednesday.

"Feelings, Nothing More than Feelings"...

Although my initial reaction to putting on today's outfit was a pleased smile, I'm having a blah day. It's cloudy and has been for days, and I need sleep!

So my second thought was to wonder how soon I'd get bored with this outfit, to negatively imagine another 29 days of staring at boring outfits in the mirror ~ well, you get the idea. So I'm going to pay no attention to any of it, because I'm sure that tomorrow, I will return to the regularly scheduled programming :).

In fact, I considered hopping over the Six website because I'm sure their energy will be infectious, and in fact, that's where I'm headed next.

Does your mood ever affect the way you feel about your clothes?

Six Items or Less Begins: My New 30-Day Wardrobe Challenge...

My Six...

Which six would you choose?

The goal for Six Items or Less, a 30 day wardrobe challenge, is to choose six items of clothing, not including outerwear, underwear, pajamas, loungewear, workout clothes or accessories, and wear only them for 30 days.

People choose this challenge for different reasons, some to create a uniform or a signature style. Others to move toward minimalism. Others to challenge their creativity. Etc.

What I realized last week as I was confirming my six choices (I tried them all on again), is that I have a uniform!

It is definitely a secondary motivation to test out a specific combination, cardigan/tank/pants, because I already know that that works. But that's how it turned out this time!

Here are my choices...

Free Image Hosting at www.picturetrail.comFree Image Hosting at www.picturetrail.com

Today's Outfit...

LOVE the combo of blue and brown, and how comfortable it feels. I think this may become one of my favorite outfits!

Do you have a favorite casual outfit?

What I Hope Will Happen...

Here's the thing: dressing your truth is a process! When I did Six Items or Less the last time, I picked at least two items of my six that were really not that into me.

And over the month, my love for them grew cold as well. They were too dark and one was not the right structure/fabrication.What's worse if that my favorite pair of pants, already worn practically into nonexistence, shrank and became what used to be called "highwaters" when I was growing up. Perfect for rain or flooding!

So my hope is that the "magic ball" of my experience will say, "you have chosen wisely!" If each piece is a perfect match not only for a Dressing Your Truth type two, but also for my developing sense of signature style, then this month should feel pretty good. That's my hope!

Could you limit yourself to six pieces of clothing? Would you ever choose a 30 day wardrobe challenge?

Wardrobe Remix: What I Learned from this 30 Day Wardrobe Challenge...

Here's What I've Learned...

What has become more clear during the 30 for 30 Remix, a 30-day wardrobe challenge, is that defining signature style requires four important questions. Each question must be answered fully in order during the quest to find your signature style...

(1) What is my Dressing Your Truth type?

I can't tell you how many times I tried to compromise with something that I suspected was not my type when I ordered it and confirmed that when it arrived. Y'all, I am really stubborn! Hardheaded.

But looking back on the things I was unsure about, didn't love, or that didn't seem all that into me, either, I invariably found that something about the color, the fabric or the fit was not what is best for a Dressing Your Type type two.

(2) What do I love?

There were some outfit combinations that I loved so much, I didn't want to take them off! I'd get all dressed up basically to try it on, because I had nowhere to go that day, and wouldn't want to take it off. Hours would go by before I finally was willing to give it back to my closet.

And then there were others that were okay, but I would be fine with not wearing them again. Why bother with them, if I can have love?

(3) What loves me back?

Being overweight, having a buddha belly and occasionally retaining water, as women sometimes do, all give me a hard way to go at times when I'm trying to put together a wardrobe. Just like in life, sometimes you will be rejected for being overweight.

Thank goodness, however, there are clothes that will love you just the way you are! And those are the ones I'm keeping.

(4) What expresses the inner me?

On the Dressing Your Truth forum, there are several other women with threads about their quests for signature style (I have one, too). Well, they came up with the idea of looking in the Dressing Your Truth book at the list of words that describes your type to decide what you want your style to express.

I resisted doing that for a while, but finally, gave in and looked at the list. The words I chose were gentle, soft, sweet and warm. Believe it or not, once I had that list, I understood why some of my pieces were okay in every other way I had measured them, but still didn't feel quite right for me.

So the things I still have in my closet, that will go with me into my next 30-day wardrobe challenge,  Six Items or Less, and into Project 333 (90 days long), are things that to the best of my understanding at this time, fit all four of my criteria. They are Dressing Your Truth type two clothes I love, that love me back and express who I really am.

By the way, click here, if you want to read about all the mistakes I made the last time I did Six Items or Less.

My "Week Four" Experience...

I spent this week trying on the last of my "maybe"s so I could be really, totally clear about what to wear for these next three months or so. One thing I learned was that the denim jacket does not work as a shirt. But it's very nice as a jacket (go figure).
The cloud, grey and maplewood combination works out well, and the brown prairie skirt works, too, with the things I'd be wearing during Six Items or Less. Does that mean I'm choosing them both?

I think I am going to choose the maplewood pants over the grey ones. And the brown pants over the brown skirt.

My Favorite Outfits...

What did you wear this week and how do you feel about it? Ever think about trying a 30-day wardrobe challenge of your own?

Three in Thirty: How Was Your Month? My Closing Thoughts...

This Month's Goals…

(1) Choose all the pieces for my upcoming Project 333 challenge in April.

Did it!! I have my list ready and am unlikely to change it, unless I switch out some of the jewelry.

Denying myself my new faves (some of the bracelets, the rings; why can't I wear them all?) is hard, but I had to make room for the clothes!

(2) Use this 30 for 30 Remix to identify/clarify my signature style.

Did that, too! I learned a lot about how hardheaded I am and how tempted to compromise with things I already kinda know won't work.

Other things I figured out by trial and error. And there were losses. Always hard to say goodbye, but sometimes there's no help for it!

Wanna see some of the month in outfits?...

(3) Take weekends off and nurture my relationships with myself and my family.

This was my biggest area of challenge. Meaning, I didn't do as well as I would have liked. But as I am beginning to find, just setting it as a goal sets a process in motion that seems to go on even after the month is over.

So I am hopeful! I did make progress; I spent more weekend time "off" than I was doing before, and I hope it continues to improve. If not, I'll pick it up as a goal again after the dust settles in July as Project 333 comes to an end :).

My Thoughts about this Month...

Great month!! Getting dressed has never been more fun! And I am so happy with the 3 in 30 group. I love checking in each week and seeing how everyone is doing.

How are you feeling about your goals this month? Congratulate yourself for whatever you accomplished!

30 Day Wardrobe Challenge: The Denim Jacket Test

Have you ever tried to wear a jacket as a shirt? That was my goal, today, to see if it would work. I thought it would be cooler as the weather warms up.

Well, that didn't work! It looked weird buttoned up and I was sure it would have to go. But then, it occurred to me to at least try it with a tank top, and that made it look much better. The best news is that it didn't feel any warmer.

Today's Outfit...

My "Thumbs-Up" Ratings: 1-10...

comfort ~ 8
wearability ~ 8
"love it" ~ 9
loves me back ~ 9

How I Felt In It...

My biggest concern, that it would be too hot, was not warranted. I would say it's at least a three-season jacket. I'm hoping it works at least 'til the end of June.

I love the way it looked!! I won't get to wear this exact outfit again until after Six Items or Less, and I'm kinda missing it already.

Will It Make the Cut?...

Yes! My main concern in wearing it this week was not Six Items or Less, which starts on Monday, but Project 333, which also starts next week. And it will definitely work for Project 333.

What are you wearing and how do you feel about it?

A Reader Asks: Why Do You Wear the Same Colors All the Time?

In yesterday’s post, Danyelle asked me the question in the title of this post. No, she didn’t ask me that in those words! But basically, she wanted to know if I had help with knowing which colors look best on me.

Here is my answer…
The program that I promote so passionately here on this blog, Dressing Your Truth, features an online course that helps you determine your beauty type and then, tells you which shades or tones of colors will be best for you. They even send you a card with the colors on it.

Well, I am a type two! And I try (except when I am unable to squash my inner rebel) to stick to the colors that are best for a type two.

Invariably, when, for whatever reason, I don't, I find myself looking in the mirror, trying to figure out what's not quite right about my outfit. The ones I fall in love with, on the other hand, let me know that I have every criteria right.

Of course, there are some colors I like more than others and I started w/ those. But I am also developing a fondness for new ones. There are colors I never would have thought I’d wear that are now my favorites because of how they look when I wear them.
It reminds me of how you might not like a perfume as much if you sniff in the bottle as you will once it has a chance to blend with your own chemistry. There are colors I have seen in a catalog that I took a chance on because I knew they fit my Dressing Your Truth type but wondered if I would like them once I wore them.
Well, I was delighted to discover that once they were on and in combination with other colors, a synthesis occurred that made them even prettier than they were in the catalog or on the hanger.
When that happens, it reminds me, and my inner rebel, that dressing your truth really does work.
Powerfully!

30 Day Wardrobe Challenge: Dodging the Skirt

Today's Outfit...

My "Thumbs-Up" Ratings: 1-10...

comfort ~ 9
wearability ~ 9

How I Felt In It...

I liked the outfit but wasn't in love with it. When I added a scarf, it looked like a great outfit to wear occasionally, like to church or a special event, but not something I would want to wear everyday.

Will It Make the Cut?...

I'm not sure. I love that skirt but I am beginning to think I don't want to wear it every other day. It will definitely be a part of the Project 333 challenge, but I may go for the brown pants for Six Items or Less.

I love skirts and dresses, but most of my days are spent working at home, homeschooling or running errands. It's important to keep that in mind when you're exploring your personal style. Divide up your time, and plan for a wardrobe that meets your needs.

For me, if I'm going to have to wear it every other day, it should probably not be a skirt.

What are you wearing and how do you feel about it?

30 Day Wardrobe Challenge: Decisions, Decisions!

Final Preparations

Well, we're entering the home stretch now! This is my last week of the 30 for 30 Remix, my 30 day wardrobe challenge.

As I've mentioned all along the way, my goal has been to use this challenge to prepare for my upcoming Project 333 challenge, which begins in April and will last 3 months, and then, the next Six Items or Less challenge, which starts next Monday (March 28th).

Project 333

Well, I'm happy to report that I am feeling fairly comfortable with my choices for Project 333. It has been hard to narrow them down and there are a couple of items of equal value that I debate back and forth about, but for the most part, my list for that challenge is looking pretty good!

Six Items or Less

But there are a couple of items in my "six" list I am having second thoughts about and I plan to use this week to decide for sure which ones I will pick.

My two choices are between my dark chocolate pants and my brown prairie skirt...

And between the grey pants and the maplewood pants...

How I Felt In It...

Wonderful! I loved this outfit. Didn't want to take it off. So I'm pretty sure the maplewood pants will be part of my six.

Will It Make the Cut?...

Not only will it make the cut, I am looking forward to wearing it!

What are you wearing and how do you feel about it?
