New Series: How to Create 30 Outfits w/ Just 10 Pieces...

As a result of several 30 day wardrobe challenges, I looked for information about how to create a month’s worth of outfits with very few pieces. And in these economic times, we need all the help we can use about how to live well with less!

So this weekly series will show you how to create 30 outfits with just 10 pieces, but will also help you to plan for the next Six Items or Less challenge in case you decide to join us.

12 Simple Separates
Heather Claus, of 365 Days of Style, put together a free pdf called 12 Simple Separates in which she shows you how to get 80 outfits from just 12 separates. And she describes a process of beginning with just a capsule of three items and then, adding another capsule of three. My advice diverges from hers a wee bit but is based on her plan.
Start with 2 Capsules of Three
With one capsule of a cardigan, top and bottom and then, another capsule of the same, using matching colors or neutrals, you get 12 possible combinations, providing you can wear the tops without the cardigans or jackets. I’m not willing to bare my arms, and for this current Six Items or Less challenge, I chose tank tops, so I only have 8 outfit possibilities.
Your homework is to choose your six favorite pieces: 2 cardigans or jackets, 2 tops and 2 bottoms.

Okay - baby steps, huh? I think I could do that!

Hi Aurie! Great. Yes, baby steps and the buddy system have pretty much gotten me through life, in general :).

What fun! And it totally reminds me of the latest Photojojo Newsletter which I got this morning:
Maybe something for your readers, too? :)

Wow, we have homework? LOL. Once broken down like this, I can see how we can get multiple looks from a few pieces. Seems quite easy actually.

mixing and matching is what my Mom always called it. You do make getting the most out of a wardrobe seem easy. Thanks for more fab tips!

@Gabi, I think it's fun, too! And I'm heading right for that website to check it out.

@Danyelle, well yes, but this is the fun kind of homework :). And it is easy once you think about it that way.

@Martha, exactly! Mixing and matching is the key to doing far more with less.

Thanks, ladies, for visiting and commenting!

Gabi, I checked it out and that is way too much work for me! But folks who have the patience for traditional scrapbooking might like it.

Okay, that's it. I've got to finally do this Jeanine. Making an appointment with my closet now.

It is quite amazing what you can do with a tiny capsule wardrobe. I was helping my friend with her wardrobe last week and I made her try every top on with every skirt and trousers. She had never done that before. And never worn her suits as separates. She's now got a whole new set of outfits she never thought she had. We haven't even started on her accessories lol.

Michelle, that's great! Let me know how it goes.

Heather, how fun! I bet she was thrilled to have new outfits. It's like going shopping in your closet.

Jeanine, I love this premise. I used to have a closet full of clothes - and I'd lose things because I had too many. That's not the case now, but my closet is filled with things that I don't like to wear, but do because it's all I have. I'll be watching this space for your ideas, tips and direction on how to change this and make my wardrobe something easy to manage and that I'm proud to wear!

Hi Lisbeth! Thanks!!

That was the case for me, too, and I wore them and just tried not to pay attention to them, LOL. Much better now, thank goodness.

I'll look forward to your feedback!
